Founded in 1985, Door of Hope strives to equip families and children experiencing homelessness to rebuild their lives. Unlike most homeless service organizations where families are separated, the Door of Hope program keeps the family unit together as they work towards their end goal of achieving permanent housing. Transportation is a key service that Door of Hope provides to families. But that can be hard to do when there aren’t enough vehicles to get the job done, often forcing staff to use their own vehicles. To that end, PCF awarded Door of Hope a $25,000 Capital Grant in 2017 to purchase a minivan.
“The minivan provided by the Pasadena Community Foundation will be used daily by our staff to pick up the children of the families in our program from the multiple schools they attend,” says Door of Hope Executive Director Keith Buck. “Previously staff had to use their own vehicles and make several trips, which took time away from our After School Program activities. In addition, the minivan will prove invaluable for the frequent field trips the children take to area museums, colleges, and universities and to outdoor activities such as hiking and rock-climbing, as well as transporting children to and from the annual summer camp in the mountains.”
