For 26 years, the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center (RBAC) at Pasadena’s Brookside Park has provided hundreds of third-grade students from the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) with swim, dive and water polo lessons. This vital Water Safety Program supports many students who have little to no previous aquatic experience. Drowning can be prevented with proper swim instruction and we provide this opportunity to every student in Pasadena regardless of socioeconomic status to help ensure every member of our community is water safe. The Program provides 15 fully-funded swim lessons to every 3rd-grade student in the Pasadena Unified School District, including those with special needs.

A consistent Pasadena Child Health Foundation (a PCF fund) grantee organization, RBAC has received nearly $500,000 in PCF funding since its first grant in 1981. It has received a total of $133,000 just since 2020.

“Our PCHF grants solidify our unwavering commitment to fostering the health and well-being of children throughout the Greater Pasadena area.”

Jeannine Bogaard, PCF Director of Community Impact

The Water Safety Program goes beyond traditional swim lessons by providing a comprehensive water safety curriculum and all necessary items, including swimsuits, goggles, and towels. Over the past 35 years, the program has reached an impressive number of students and has had a lasting positive impact on the local community.

Jimmy Francis, President and Executive Director of RBAC, said he was grateful to the Pasadena Community Foundation. “Through our partnership with PCF, we will continue to empower every 3rd-grade student in PUSD with essential water safety skills,” he said.
