FUND PROFILE

Bill & Betsy Rawn Endowment for Seniors in Need

The Bill & Betsy Rawn Endowment for Seniors in Need supports Pasadena Community Foundation’s grantmaking for senior health care services. Created by their children to honor their commitment to elder care, the fund extends the legacy of the Rawns and the mission of the former Scripps Home.

OVERVIEW

About the Fund

Bill and Betsy Rawn were actively involved in Pasadena life and raised their family here. They especially supported the work of the Scripps Home in Altadena, which provided low-income seniors with life care during its operation over many decades. Bill Rawn served on the Board of Scripps for several years.

(story continues below)

Bill died in 2008, and Betsy passed in 2011. Their trust included a $300,000 bequest to the Scripps Home. Unfortunately, the Scripps Home closed permanently in 2010, leaving the Rawn children to determine an organization that would best honor their parents’ intentions of supporting seniors. The Rawn children chose Pasadena Community Foundation, where in 2012, they created the Bill & Betsy Rawn Endowment for Seniors in Need.

In creating the endowment with PCF, the Rawns’ sons chose to incorporate language that was similar to the mission of the Scripps Home. They specified that their parents’ trust should be directed to local organizations that provide services to senior citizens related to health care needs. Through the Rawns, then, the mission of Scripps carries on through PCF and continues to make an impact in our community. This endowment extends its focus beyond a single organization and supports a cause that was very close to Rawns’ hearts – it has been instrumental in sustaining PCF’s Senior Grant Program.

Grantmaking Impact

Through this fund, PCF has been able to

  • Provide sustained and flexible funding
  • Offer consistent financial support for our local grantmaking programs throughout Greater Pasadena
  • Enhance community programs
  • Empower organizations to expand their services and reach more individuals in need
  • Direct resources when and where they are needed most, respond quickly to emerging needs, and fill funding gaps that restricted gifts can’t cover.
