FUND PROFILE

Shrivastava Family Endowment

The Shrivastava Family Endowment supports Pasadena Community Foundation’s grantmaking in community and economic development. Established by Uma and Dr. Prakash Shrivastava, the fund honors their commitment to empowering working women and advancing opportunities for local families.

OVERVIEW

About the Fund

Uma Shrivastava is proud of her long career as a financial services executive and as an award-winning owner of La Cañada Books and Toys. A native of India, she arrived in the United States in 1965 and moved to Pasadena in 1989 with her husband, Dr. Prakash Shrivastava, a USC Keck School of Medicine Professor Emeritus of Radiation Oncology.

Uma shines when she discusses her tenure with Women at Work (WAW), a nonprofit organization that started in the late 1970s to help women gain job and career development training. During her more than 20 years’ participation with WAW, she held numerous leadership roles – experience that strengthened her belief that women should have careers and be given the opportunity to earn their fullest potential.

Uma’s husband, Prakash, is a long-time member of the Rotary Club and lends his medical expertise to projects in the U.S. and in India. The couple helped establish a hospital in their native country, and Prakash currently spends his days working closely with a group in India to create prostheses with 3D printing.

A Legacy for Working Women

In 2021, Uma and Prakash established the Shrivastava Family Endowment, the first endowment designated to PCF’s recently created Community & Economic Development Impact Area. “I have always believed that when a woman is able to stand on her own two feet, it helps the whole family,” Uma says emphatically. “When you talk to people in my generation, so many of them have taken classes with WAW. I wanted our endowment to be a legacy to the women who founded WAW and participated in the organization. We appreciate knowing that people in our local work sector will benefit from our gift.”

Grantmaking Impact

Through this fund, PCF has been able to

  • Empower organizations to expand their services and reach more individuals in need
  • Direct resources when and where they are needed most, respond quickly to emerging needs, and fill funding gaps that restricted gifts can’t cover.
